SITE LEADERS AND PARTICIPANTS

SITE LEADER EXPECTATIONS

Site Leaders are the facilitators of an individual AB experience for a group of students. They organize finance and logistical plans, team building activities, issue-based educational material and reflections for their teams throughout the year. Along with their co-leader, Site Leaders finalize project arrangements with the community partners and meet regularly with the Steering Committee and AB Advisor to report their progress. They should be in good standing within the university and meet all expectations below. If you fail to meet any one of these expectations, you will be dismissed from your role and the program overall. 


 

  1. You must have and maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. 

  2. Be degree-seeking and enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the fall and spring semester. 

  3. Must attend ALL mandatory Tuesday AB meetings [NO EXCPETIONS]

    • Steering Committee: 3:30pm to 5pm

    • Workshops: 6pm to 8pm

    • FIU Day of Service (3rd Saturday in October every year)

    • MLK Day of Service (Saturday on MLK weekend every year)

  4. Adhere to the FIU Student Code of Conduct. 

  5. Act in good judgement and be accountable for any actions that can be directly associated with CLS sponsored or organized activities.

  6. Be able to work effectively both as an individual and part of a team. 

  7. Present, engaged, and respectful during all virtual and remote meetings.

  8. Agree to uphold the values of the Alternative Breaks Program: Responsibility, resilience, equity through service, inclusivity, and reflection to action.

AB is more than a trip! This is a service learning experience and for you to truly have the AB experience you need to complete the following in addition to your main service experience: Pre-Service Project, Reorientation Project, and Canvas.

THESE POSITIONS ARE ABOUT GROWTH! Students are not expected to be experts or have prior knowledge of AB. The most important quality to have is commitment.

WHAT IF I WANT TO BE A PARTICIPANT INSTEAD?

Participants make up the majority of the program. Participants are expected to attend the ALL AB workshops, Pre- and Post- Service events, program-wide fundraisers and functions. In addition, participants must attend regular pre-experience meetings facilitated by their site leaders in order to become educated on their site/issue and assist in pre-experience preparations as assigned by the site leader. The role of the Participant is to be an active member of the group in order to ensure the success of the team.​
